Talk about a cool conference! The Fields of Conflict Conference is being held at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, UK, which is a truly magnificent museum (at least, so I have heard).

Livivng Through the Dead: The Material Culture and Social Context of commeration of the Dead from Antiquity to the 18th century: May 25-27, 2006

"The focus of this conference is the material culture and social context of memory and commemoration of the dead in the European historical periods, roughly the Graeco-Roman period to about 1800. Our approach is an interdisciplinary one, drawing on artefactual, documentary and pictorial evidence, to examine death, memory and commemoration in various historical, social and cultural contexts. The inclusion of historians and art historians opens up a fruitful dialogue focusing on the archaeological and material record of burial and funerary monumentation. The focus of the conference permits comparative discussion while remaining sufficiently geographically and chronologically concentrated on documented societies to be meaningful."
